Kids Games | Scarecrow Festival Brings Fun To Akron Park

The event will be held at the Akron City Park this Saturday.

This is the ninth year for the festival, which is sponsored by the Friendship & Service Club (F&S Club) of Akron.

“It’s a definite family outing,” said Sue Higman, a member of the F&S Club. “There are just so many things to do at the festival.”

She noted there will be homemade ice cream cranked with a John Deere engine again this year.

“That was a big hit last year,” Higman said.

She estimates there will be close to 50 vendors in the park, offering food, treats, crafts and more.

Other activities include the kids “jumping cage,” petting zoo, cowpie lottery, pony rides, kiddie train rides and the chain saw artist.

There will also be plenty of scarecrows created by area residents, from youth to adult, according to Higman.

Last year the festival had more than 50 scarecrows, and Higman expects that same number again this year.

Judging for the scarecrow contest begins at 10 a.m. with prizes to be awarded at noon.

There are three categories in the contest, preschool through grade five; grades six through 12, and adults, age 18 and up.

More than $600 in prize money will be awarded to the first through third place finishers.

The scarecrows become the property of the F&S Club (with the exception of preschool through grade five entrants, who may keep them if they wish), and will be sold at the 2 p.m. auction.

All money raised from the auction will be used for community projects supported by the F&S Club.

In the past, the group has given money to the Akron Care Center, Akron Community Theatre, Akron Day Care Center, Akron Fire Department, Akron Little League, Akron Public Library, Akron Swimming Pool, Christmas for needy families project, drug awareness and prevention, Akron-Westfield Community Schools, the Red Cross and the Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.

The day-long event begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m. or so, according to Higman.

Again this year, the Akron Firemen’s Steak Fry will be held starting at 5 p.m. at the fire station.

Higman, on behalf of the F&S Club, invites everyone to make a full day of the Akron event.
