With the Kongregate acquisition, GameStop will tap into the surging popularity of “social play” in which gamers connect in online communities.
Kongregate hosts about 10 million players monthly, and approximately 23 million hours of game time are logged monthly at the website, according to GameStop, which sells new and used videogames at its shops.

“To date, our company’s unique DNA has given more than 8,500 game developers the tools to make their games social, reach a huge audience and make money from over 30,000 innovative games,” Jim Greer said in a release.
“Our community will only be enhanced with GameStop’s close relationship with millions of passionate gamers.”
GameStop is based in Texas but boasts thousands of shops around the world.
The move comes as the distribution of videogame software shifts increasingly to the Internet with digital downloads supplanting visits to real-world stores.
